Guide
How to use WordFone
Use this guide to create your first WordFone, choose the right visibility, share or look up an identity, and create a private access link when you do not want the identity listed publicly.
1. Search for a memorable identity
Start on the home page with Search WordFone or Register a WordFone. Enter the word or phrase you want people to remember, then choose the country suffix that matches the calling country for the telephone number.
If the identity is available, continue into registration. If it is already registered, reserved, unavailable, or blocked, try another word or suffix.
- Use words people can spell and say easily.
- The suffix is part of the identity, such as green-grocer.uk.
- The name.tld format is a calling identity, not an internet domain registration.
2. Create your account and verify the number
Create an account so WordFone can attach the identity to the right owner. Verify your email address first, then verify the telephone number using the phone verification flow.
Phone verification proves control of the destination number. The identity is not live and exclusive in the directory until the claim and publish step is complete.
- Use a real account email that you control.
- Enter the telephone number in international format.
- If you later change the primary number, you will need to verify the new number.
3. Publish and choose visibility
After phone verification, complete the claim and publish step. Published identities renew annually, subject to the billing settings shown at checkout.
Choose the visibility that matches how you want people to find you.
- Private: lookup only says the identity is active but private.
- Public: lookup can reveal the telephone number after confirmation, but not the display name.
- Listed: lookup can reveal the telephone number and display name after confirmation.
4. Share a public or listed WordFone
To share a public or listed identity, give people the name.tld identity, for example green-grocer.uk. They can open the directory lookup and search for that exact identity.
For public and listed identities, the lookup page uses a confirmation step before revealing the telephone number to reduce automated harvesting. When the number is shown, it is clickable as a telephone link.
- Public lookup does not show the display name.
- Listed lookup shows the display name.
- Private lookup does not reveal the telephone number unless the owner shares a private access link.
5. Look up an existing WordFone
Visitors can use the directory lookup to query an identity such as green-grocer.uk. If no active record is found, the identity may be available, unpublished, expired, suspended, or awaiting verification.
If the identity is active but private, the visitor sees that it is private. If it is public or listed, the visitor can confirm before revealing the telephone number.
6. Create a private access link
For a verified private identity, go to My calling identities and choose Private links. The link label is required and is prefilled with a random two-word phrase so you can recognise it later in usage logs.
Choose whether the link should show the display name, whether it should expire, and whether it should have a maximum number of views. Create the link, copy it immediately, download the labelled SVG or PNG QR code if you need it, and share it only with the people you want to have private access.
- Private links and their QR codes are shown once only. If you lose one, create a new link and revoke the old one.
- Only a secure hash of the token is stored, so the original URL cannot be recovered later.
- Private links work only while the identity remains verified, active, and private.
7. Monitor and revoke private links
The Private links page shows each link label, what it reveals, the view count, expiry, last-used time, status, and a revoke action.
Successful private-link views also appear in Recent account activity as Private link used: label, with the date and time, IP address, and device string recorded for the owner account.
- Revoke a link if it was sent to the wrong person.
- Revoke a link if you lost it and are not sure whether it was copied.
- Use separate labels for different people or groups so usage is easier to understand.
8. Report misuse or incorrect records
Anyone can report an identity for suspected impersonation, spam, incorrect number assignment, abuse, or another safety concern. Reports do not expose private owner account details.
Moderators can review reports and appeals, and may suspend or reinstate identities where appropriate.
